Venezuela: A Land of Geographic Contrasts

Venezuela, a South American nation positioned along the northern coast of the continent, boasts an incredibly diverse landscape. From snow-capped peaks in the Andes to expansive savannas and the world's highest waterfall, Venezuela's geography is filled with fascinating variations.

The Four Regions

The Venezuelan Highlands

These mountains border the Caribbean Sea and are a northeastern extension of the powerful Andes mountain range. Here, the peaks rise, including the country's highest, Pico BolĂvar (16,312 feet).

The Maracaibo Lowlands

Located in the northwest part of the country, these lowlands are spoon-shaped, surrounded by mountains and opening to the Caribbean Sea. Here, fertile lands and Lake Maracaibo, the largest lake in South America, create a unique zone.

The Orinoco Plains (Llanos)

The center of Venezuela is dominated by these vast plains, stretching from the Andes' slopes to the Orinoco River delta. The grasslands and rich wetlands define these plains and provide an important habitat for a vast array of wildlife.

The Guayana Highlands

This region covers the southeastern half of Venezuela. Its ancient rock formations make up a striking landscape filled with unusual flat-topped mountains called tepuis. From one of these tepuis plummets Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world.

The Mighty Orinoco River

One of the longest rivers in South America, the lifeblood of much of Venezuela is the Orinoco River. It crosses the country in a wide arc, forming a natural border with Colombia and making its way through the plains and highlands. Finally, the Orinoco creates a vast delta before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
